Our dashboard uses the most recent publicly available data from the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP), specifically the 2022-2023 and 2021-2022 reporting years.

OSEP collects this data annually from state education agencies (SEAs) as part of the IDEA Section 618 data reporting requirements. States are required to report dispute resolution data, including complaints, mediations, and due process hearings, based on activity from the previous school year.

For example, the 2022-2023 data reflects disputes that occurred during that school year. However, because states submit their data in the fall following the school year (e.g., fall 2023 for the 2022-2023 data), OSEP needs time to review, validate, and publish the data. This process means the latest available dataset is often a year behind the current school year.
